To Form a More Perfect UNION!

To Form a More Perfect UNION!

To Form a More Perfect UNION makes the connection between the Preamble of the U.S. Constitution "We the People of the United States in order to form a more perfect union" and the important role unions and collective bargaining rights play in giving the American worker a voice to negotiate salary, benefits, and conditions in the workplace.

Anyone who follows the news is aware of what happened in Madison, Wisconsin. Governor Scott Walker had only been in office two months when he launched an all out assault on the collective bargaining rights of state workers. In response, thousands of Wisconsin residents hit the streets to express their displeasure with Walker's radical agenda while hundreds of other citizens occupied the Capitol Building in Madison.

Claiming the elimination of collective bargaining was the "best" solution to an alleged budget crisis, Walker showed true motivation when he removed the collective bargaining rights issue from budget legislation in an effort to ram it through the legislature without a quorum, as Democratic legislators had fled the state in opposition to his frontal attack on state workers. Ultimately, Walker was successful in passing this legislation which was subsequently overturned by Wisconsin voters.

This battle was not about budgets. It was not really about collective bargaining. It was an effort to destroy unions as a tool to amplify the voice of working Americans. Ultimately what is at stake here is the democratic principle of government "of the People, by the People, and for the People!" Those who work to destroy unions seek to weaken the fabric of the American union by weakening the right of Americans to associate or organize in conjunction with the free speech rights guaranteed by the First Amendment.

Everyone knows there is strength in numbers. Examples cross the spectrum of human activity, including political parties, Chambers of Commerce, professional associations, trade unions, the military, and even the United States of America. The founders of our country laid out the importance and power of people coming together in common cause with the words "to form a more perfect union" found in the Preamble of the U.S. Constitution.

Most thoughtful citizens know that all significant workplace benefits were won as a result of the collective bargaining power of unions that rallied in defense of the working class against the excesses of corporate bosses. History records that many of these battles were bloody affairs due to the extreme resistance monied interests had to allowing workers to negotiate anything.

The number of people that have taken to the streets, not only in Wisconsin but across America, in recent weeks clearly indicates that the general public is becoming increasingly aware that the attack on unions by officials in Wisconsin, willing to subjugate fairness and compassion in favor of furthering an anti-American agenda, is really a blatant, greed-driven effort to weaken the ability of the middle class to drive the priorities of our society.
